EU flag Benelux trip, Easter 1999

Belgian flag Brussels

An underrated city - it's not just the EU and NATO here; there are some private sector employees here too!

Netherlands flag AmsterdamGay site

As per usual, accomodation could not be found. So this time I ended up in Utrecht.

Netherlands flag Utrecht

A prosperous town, the hub of the Netherlands transport system with a train station that seemed far too big.

German flag Cologne/Köln

My favourite German city (mainly because its so close).

Belgian flag Bruges

If you're going to have some chocolate, this is a fine place to be to have it.

Belgian flag Ghent

Another nice Flemish city.

French flag Lille

In the centre of Lille is a famous citidel, architected by Vauban. I discovered when I walked into it that it is still in use by the military. Oops! An officer who looked like a handsomer version of Jean-Claude van-Damme escorted me out again. I did not think it would have been wise to ask for a picture to record this. He was obviously no great anglophone, but luckily I managed to persuade him I was just a dumb tourist, not some terrorist trying to sneak in and blow the place up.
